Maths
Intent
It is our aim at Valley View that all children enjoy maths, feel confident and develop an enthusiasm for the subject. We also want them to develop their growth mindset by taking risks, challenging themselves and persevering when something becomes more difficult. We aim for them to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice, and to be able to solve increasingly complex problems over time. We want to equip them with the skills of calculation, reasoning and problem solving that they need in life beyond school.
Implementation
At Valley View, in the Early Years Foundation Stage, we follow a combination of the NCETM and White Rose Maths Hub. In years 1-6, we follow the National Curriculum, which is the basis for all maths planning. This is supported by the use of White Rose Maths Hub Schemes of Learning which is carefully planned using a small-step approach to ensure consistency and progression throughout the school. This means that children work through the curriculum in a way which allows them to build on prior learning so their knowledge gradually builds into long-term, secure and adaptable understanding. Children are supported in their learning by a range of practical and pictorial strategies which promote deep understanding of key concepts.
Planning
Our calculation policy (see below) clearly states which strategies should be taught in which year groups and this document is used as a starting point for ‘what and how’ to teach strategies. The White Rose small steps means that there is an equal balance of fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Learning and teaching resources are supplemented with a range of appropriate materials from other areas such as Nrich and the NCETM. Planned intervention ensures misconceptions are addressed swiftly and that all pupils are able to ‘keep-up’.
In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, we also do Mastering Number from the NCETM in short, sharp additional sessions which aims to secure understanding number right from the start.
Maths Lessons
Maths is taught daily in each class. Lessons often begin with counting and/or a 5-10 minute mental starter (carefully planned by the teacher or Flashback 4) that allows children to apply previously taught skills and recall key number facts. Children use a range of manipulatives such as Numicon, bead strings, counters and tens frames to support them as often as needed.
The Maths Progression Document below outlines the key learning pupils will experience in maths lessons during their time at Valley View. This will be complimented by a range of opportunities for children to explore and apply maths across the other curriculum subjects.
Times Tables
We understand the importance of having quick recall of the times tables. Years 1-6 have times table sessions at least 3 times per week. We use Times Tables Rock Stars in both paper form and online to support with this. All pupils from years 1-6 have a log on so they can continue this practice at home.
