Deepdale Class Learning Journey 2019-2020

PDF icon Curriculum Evening Meeting 10th March 2020

A typical week in Deepdale Class

Each morning starts with a morning activity to help the children settle into the new school day. Each day has a different theme. Maths Monday (based on the maths skills that we are learning and recapping core skills such as number bonds and counting), Text Tuesday (reading activities), Word Wednesday (spellings or word puzzles and problems), Thinking Thursday (these activities encourage children to develop their thinking skills and explain the reasoning behind their thoughts) and Fun Friday (less structured activities that could include things such as developing their colouring skills).

Most mornings we do English, maths and guided reading and afternoons tend to be for subjects such as science, PE, spellings and PSHE.

We currently do PE on a Tuesday and have a session with Mr Anderson from Leeds West on a Thursday.

On a Monday afternoon we have a 15 minute Spanish session with Mrs Woodward.

On Tuesday afternoon Mrs Jackson teaches computing and music.

Each day a Star of the Day is chosen and that child gets to take Oleg the class teddy home for the night. On a Thursday a Star of the Week certificate is handed out and parents are invited to assembly on Friday morning.

Spring 1

Happy New Year! All of the staff in Deepdale hope that you have had a happy and restful Christmas break.

5th March

Today was World Book Day, as part of our celebrations we created 'a book in a box' for how homework. Can you guess which books these are?

26th February

In Deepdale Class we have been learning about the explorer Ernest Shackleton. The class have loved learning about is famous journey and how his crew managed to survive even when their ship got stuck in the ice and sank. As part of our learning we created our own Weddell Sea pictures in art to help us with our description in English.

4th February

Last week Deepdale Class took trips to the local green grocers to buy vegetables for a soup they were designing for an Arctic explorer. They had to use the skills they had learnt in maths to pay for the food and to check the change. In class they enjoyed making the soup, developing their cutting and chopping skills. Finally they all tried the soup.

20th January

This week we have started learning all about division. The class have really enjoyed the opportunity to use the practical equipment.

Autumn 2

This half term Miss Winterbottom, a student teacher, will be working in Deepdale Class.

PE will now be on a Monday and a Thursday. Monday will be our Real PE session and Thursday will be a gymnastics session with Mr Anderson from Leeds West Academy.

3rd December

The children were very excited to find a Christmas tree in our classroom today. The Christmas excitement is definitely building!

29th November

Today in science, Miss Winterbottom has been teaching the class all about hygiene and how germs can be easily spread. To show this some of the class dipped their hands in glitter (germs) before shaking hands with other members of the class to see how easily the germs spread. The class really enjoyed this and were amazed by how easy it is to spread germs, especially if you do not wash your hands.

21st November

This half term the class are enjoying their weekly gymnastics sessions with Mr Anderson from Leeds West. The class are enjoying learning how to create different shapes with their bodies.

18th October

Today we were visited by ArtForms who helped us to learn more about the Great Fire of London and how the fire spread. We spent the morning making models of London and in the afternoon we went outside and watched to see how the fire spread. We learnt about how the strong wind played its part and also how they tried pulling buildings down in the path of the fire to try and stop it. We had a great day!

11th October

This week in Deepdale Class we have started our topic on the Great Fire of London. We watched a video that showed us what it was like in London before the fire. We noticed that the streets were very narrow and that the buildings looked quiet tall. Then we used drama to explore what it would have been like to have walked along the streets. We thought that it would be quite loud, smelly and possibly a little bit scary.

Next week we are looking forward to a visit from ArtForms who are coming in to do a Great Fire of London workshop with us.

25th September

Today we watched a musical performance to a story all about a girl moving house with her beloved piano.  It was a wonderful show and we were able to join in.  Afterwards the cast worked with us looking at tempo, dynamics and pitch.

12th September

Today was a very exciting day in Deepdale Class! After play we discovered chairs tipped over, fruit half eaten and a red and orange dragon egg in our fruit basket. The class were extremely excited and were soon busy looking for clues. We have wrapped the egg in a blanket to keep it warm and will wait to see if it hatches.

10th September

In maths we have been learning all about the greater than and less than signs.
